CD - Compact disc, on which digitized information is recorded, for later reading by optical means. Originally developed for recording sound, CDs are now also used for storing other kinds of digitized information, including images, for which their high capacity makes them well-suited. Varieties of CDs include CD-ROM (commercially prepared discs that can be read but not altered), Photo CD (a proprietary Kodak format used for storing images scanned from photographs), and CD-R (recordable CDs on which images and other information can be written using a desktop recorder).
